Great Leadership, Better Homes
Like many landlords and households across Edmonton, Right at Home has been facing growing challenges with unwelcome critters in our properties. Until recently, Right at Home had to rely on external contractors to deal with the issue. Not only had this become time consuming, it was also very costly. Looking for a better solution, our new maintenance team worked to establish an in-house pest control program. In the first year alone, we have saved over $17,000!
In addition to the financial returns, we’ve seen great return on our human capital. One of our tenants, Billy, who has been a groundskeeper with Right at Home Housing Society since 2006, took interest in advancing his talents and has been trained and promoted to supervisor for our new pest control treatment program. Billy will oversee other residents gaining employment experience through our casual labour program, and further hone his own excellent leadership skills.
Leading with Women
Equality is a priority for Right at Home. One recent initiative has been the creation of “The Sister Crew.” The crew is an all female branch of our casual labour program that empowers women by training them in the maintenance field, which is typically male-dominated. Currently, 8 of our female residents are employed under this program and they have learned skills such as painting, drywalling, floor installation and plumbing. They have all become valuable staff members who help maintain our buildings. The crew have indicated that this program has increased confidence in their abilities, helped them battle social isolation, and many who are new Canadian immigrants have improved their English and feel more connected to their community.
Overall Positive Impact
When great leadership is in place, the response of those you serve will be more positive. Our 2018 Tenant Satisfaction survey showed 67% of tenants expressed satisfaction with the support they are receiving from our staff, a direct result of increasing our housing managers capacity by adding to our management team. Satisfaction also jumped from 17% 2017 to 36% in 2018 regarding maintenance request completion time. We expect this number to continue to rise in 2019.
Right at Home Housing Society offers more than low income housing – we are an organization made from the people who live in our properties, who put love and care into their homes and who lead in our communities.
