This past November, Right at Home Housing Society established a women’s gathering place as the first initiative in our cultural diversity programming. Spearheaded by our Indigenous Support Coordinator, Mary, the gathering space will offer an opportunity for women of all faiths and cultural backgrounds to learn from each other and build a sense of confidence, leadership, and to combat the social isolation that is prevalent among those experiencing poverty. With a particular focus on supporting the Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, we will be giving particular attention to Indigenous women who wish to share their stories. The program will create a safe space for Indigenous women to share their cultural practices and build understanding among those who may have misconceptions about their values and beliefs.
How you can help
To strengthen our women, we hope to build our gathering place to be a program that flourishes and brings those of all different walks of life together in common interests and meaningful conversation. Mary will be guiding our women through activities, such as sewing household items, learning to crochet, cooking, and making care packages for important events involving new births, marriages, and funerals for women among the group.
We are actively seeking donations from the following wishlist to help empower our women through their journey towards connectedness:
- Sewing Machines
- Sergers
- Thread
- Material
- Crochet Needles
- Yarn
- Scissors
- Craft Materials
Your support will make an impactful difference in the lives of many women for years to come.
