Creating a Village

Our Belvedere project is managed in partnership by Niginan Housing Ventures and tackles systemic struggles that at-risk families face. This 42 unit complex is a permanent supportive home to approximately 60 people who are experiencing housing insecurity. A large portion of the tenants are individuals and couples who are hard to house and homeless as well as heavy users of service already in the Fort Road area. Through Niginan’s cultural support programming, some of the units are reserved for kokums (in Cree, “grandmother”) who can act as mentors for families who are at-risk. The building includes office space for social workers to work on-site with an approach that is sensitive to Indigenous rights and needs as the tenants settle into a stable enviroment. Our project will also be linked to our tenant labor program, which provides employment opportunities for our tenants.
We are currently working with the Belvedere Community League to develop a park adjacent to this property.
