In the month of March, Right at Home Housing Society has seen the support of Mayor Don Iveson and the Royal Alexandra Hospital’s Employee’s Charitable Donations Fund. Mayor Don Iveson took an interest in Ambrose Place and the work we are accomplishing with Indigenous tenants. In addition, the Employee’s Charitable Donations Fund recognized health issues caused by bed bug infestation, and is supporting development for an internal pest control program.

Mayor Don Iveson Supports Ambrose Place

Ambrose Place is a joint venture of Right at Home Housing Society and Niginan Housing. The housing complex aims to achieve two goals:

  • Providing housing to individuals who were at one time homeless
  • Focusing on a culturally sensitive environment, in particular with regards to Indigenous Peoples

Mayor Don Iveson, Councillor Scott McKeen, and MLA David Shepherd toured Ambrose Place, and joined in an Indigenous ceremony during their stay. As a result, they experienced what it might be like to have a cultural embrace in one’s home. Acceptance of one’s culture can lead to positive physical and emotional results for those facing issues related to poverty. The government officials were impressed with our efforts to offer a safe place for practicing Indigenous values and customs, and would like to see similar housing efforts in Edmonton to that of Ambrose Place.

Royal Alexandra Hospital Employees Supportive of In-House Pest Control

Right at Home Housing is working to develop an internal pest control program with our casual labour pool. In addition to optimizing tenant health within our housing, this program will continue to employ some of our current tenants. The Royal Alexandra Hospital’s Employee’s Charitable Donations Fund donated $1000 earlier this month to support such efforts.

Right at Home Housing Society prides itself in being a pioneer toward affordable housing initiatives. We continue to pave a path towards acceptance and healthy living environments within our housing developments. Ambrose Place is an example of a culturally accepting space to call home. In addition, with our in-house pest control program, we can ensure that bed bugs are minimized within our housing units. Finally, Right at Home Housing Society is working to improve affordable housing options in Edmonton, and to allow every citizen the right to a safe, healthy, and welcoming home.
