The Alberta government released its Ten Year Plan to End Homelessness in 2008. The plan listed 17 strategies to help reduce poverty and homelessness in our province. Most noteworthy concerning Right at Home Housing Society, the 11th strategy involved increasing the availability of permanent housing with supports in our province. The Ten Year Plan to End Homelessness states:
A range of different housing options will be required, such as:
• Greater availability of existing rental units;
• Construction of new rental units;
• Single room occupancy buildings;
• Room-and-board arrangements;
• Affordable housing
Increasing affordable housing in Edmonton has always been a strong priority of our organization. As a result, with provincial efforts aligned with ours, we have seen this goal made possible. Currently, we have five new project designs for affordable housing development, as outlined in our President’s report. Three of these projects are also shovel ready and awaiting development permits. In addition, we are proud to be pioneering the first net-zero energy multi-family housing in Canada with our North Glenora project. Recently, the City of Edmonton featured Peter Amerongen of Habitat Studio in their latest Renewable series. The video touches on the exciting development of the North Glenora project and furthermore, the importance of sustainable development for our future.
